How Will Hydroelectric Power Generation Develop under Climate Change Scenarios? A Case Study in the Upper Danube Basin
نویسندگان
چکیده
Climate change has a large impact on water resources and thus on hydropower. Hydroelectric power generation is closely linked to the regional hydrological situation of a watershed and reacts sensitively to changes in water quantity and seasonality. The development of hydroelectric power generation in the Upper Danube basin was modelled for two future decades, namely 2021–2030 and 2051–2060, using a special hydropower module coupled with the physically-based hydrological model PROMET. To cover a possible range of uncertainties, 16 climate scenarios were taken as meteorological drivers which were defined from different ensemble outputs of a stochastic climate generator, based on the IPCC-SRES-A1B emission scenario and four regional climate trends. Depending on the trends, the results show a slight to severe decline in hydroelectric power generation. Whilst the mean summer values indicate a decrease, the mean winter values display an increase. To show past and future regional differences within the Upper Danube basin, three hydropower plants at individual locations were selected. Inter-annual differences originate predominately from unequal contributions of the runoff compartments rain, snowand ice-melt. OPEN ACCESS Energies 2011, 4 1509

Climate change impacts on high elevation hydropower generation in California’s Sierra Nevada: a case study in the Upper American River
Climate change is likely to affect the generation of energy from California’s high-elevation hydropower systems. To investigate these impacts, this study formulates a linear programming model of an 11-reservoir hydroelectric system operated by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District in the Upper American River basin. Four sets of hydrologic scenarios are developed using the Variable Infiltrat...

Abstract This study examines the effects of climate change on runoff in the Yellow River basin in Khuzestan province. In this study, the combination of 14 general circulation models under two emission scenarios A2 and B1 were used for simulating the climatic variables in the next period (2025-2054) compared to the baseline period (1971-2000). The weighting method of mean observed temperature...
متن کاملUncertainty Investigation of Precipitation and Temperature Scenarios for the Sira Basin under Climate Change Impact
Results of assessment of the future climate change impacts is associated with some uncertainties. Considering the range of uncertainties increases reliability of the results. In this study, climate change impacts on daily precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature of Sira basin are assessed using LARS-WG model, for 2036-65 period. Accordingly, uncertainty of new emissions scenarios (RCP2.6،...
متن کاملIntegrated Evaluation of Increasing Irrigation Efficiency and Reducing Discharge Impacts on Hydropower Generation of Basin Water Resources System(Case Study: Dez Irrigation Network – Dez Dam)
World electricity production today is heavily dependent on water resources. Studies have shown that global warming and climate changes will have significant impacts on available water resources to produce hydroelectric power. Considering that the reservoir dam in the catchment area of Dez is simultaneously a producer of hydropower and supplier of water needed for agricultural land, the aim of t...
متن کاملImpact of potential climate change on plant available soil water and percolation in the Upper Danube basin
The soil root zone of the land surface provides plants with water for transpiration and therefore biomass production and its excess water percolates downwards and ultimately recharges the groundwater aquifers. Within the project GLOWA-Danube regional scale impacts of climate change on the water cycle are investigated. Potential changes in the water cycle based on climate scenarios for 2011 to 2...
